Outline of Technology Creation

  Where we started:

-          We had a Java source code
-          We had heard of a software called FrontlineSMS

1)       Our own Java code vs. Frontline SMS
-          Java code wouldn’t compile due to a missing package.
-          Java code would be potentially faster than Frontline SMS
-          FrontlineSMS was known to work
-          FrontlineSMS has been tested in remote of Kenya already
-          FrontlineSMS has a large network of users in similar fields, who could help, and spread the word about WishVast

Winner:  FrontlineSMS

2)      External Code in FrontlineSMS – Two options (1) Local database (2) Web database
-          Local database is difficult to set up and maintain
-          Local database is faster without reliance upon strong internet connection
-          Web database is exceedingly simple to set up and maintain
-          Web database is mildly slower
-          Web database is less likely to crash

Winner:  Web database

3)      Possible extension:  Multiple Cell Phones connected for FrontlinSMS
-          Can send more messages faster
-          FrontlineSMS has issues managing multiple phones
-          Messages are sometimes not sent

Decision:  Don’t use multiple phones

4)      Possible extension:  Using a web based mass text system such as Clickatell
-          Less control that our software has
-          Much faster message rate (from approximately 5/minute => almost instantaneous)

Decision:  Pending
